It is 1931 and Australia is being hit hard by the depression. The Fletcher family travel the country in their old Ford truck, picking up any work they can. When news of gold discoveries in the North reaches them they race towards the goldfields and stake out a small claim deep in the wilderness. For the two children, Alec and Biddy, it is an exciting time without school and without responsibility. Alec's dream of groing up to become a pilot are rudely shattered when his father dies. Alec watches his mother desperately trying to support the family, and finally decides he'll have to work the claim himself.
